What Is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments out there. It involves the use of lasers to damage the hair follicles, which slows future hair growth. Our practice uses the state-of-the-art Lumenis LightSheer Quattro laser to vaporize unwanted hair on light, tan, and even dark skin. It can be used to get rid of hair all over the body, including the legs, back, and bikini line.

Most patients need a series of 6 treatments, and the frequency of your treatments will depend on what part of the body you’re having addressed. Facial hair, which grows quickly, should be treated every four to six weeks. Body hair should be treated every eight to 10 weeks.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Before your session can start, we do recommend the hairs in the treatment area are shaved and flush with the skin. If the area is not shaved, the light from the laser can singe the hairs and cause burns on your skin. We want to avoid this at all costs. The ultrasonic gel is used on the treatment area to help relieve the symptoms and make your laser appointment more comfortable.

During your sessions, our technician will tailor the settings on the machine based on your hair and skin needs for that session to get the maximum result.

The laser will emit a concentrated beam of light into the follicle where there is pigment and damage the growth of the hair. You’ll feel the warmth of the treatment, and you may experience mild stinging, but there will be no pain.

You’ll be asked to wear special goggles to protect your eyes during treatment.

FAQ

How Long Are Treatments?

The length of your treatment will depend on the size of the area you’re having addressed. A small area like the upper lip may only take 5 or 10 minutes. A larger area, such as the legs or back, may require an hour or more. It’s not uncommon for patients to have hair in more than one area addressed.

What Kind of Aftercare Is needed?

Although your skin may be slightly flushed after your session, this will subside quickly and can be eased with a cool compress. Most patients return immediately to their normal schedules. You’ll want to avoid direct sun exposure(use SPF), as well as makeup or scented lotions, for about 24 hours. You’ll also need to treat your skin with extra care and be gentle when cleansing (no exfoliation).

It’s important not to use alternative hair removal approaches, like tweezing or waxing, between your appointments. Tweezing and waxing both remove the hair by its root and that root is what the laser treatments target. Shaving is ideal for when you are receiving laser treatments.

Will This Permanently Remove Hair?

Laser treatments won’t permanently eliminate unwanted hair. Laser does reduce the number of follicles you have, while significantly slowing down the growth.

Whatever follicles are left can be treated with electrolysis to achieve the permanent result you are looking for.

Patients that receive a combination of the 2 treatments are ensured fast and permanent results.

Is It True That This Will Help With Wrinkles and Birthmarks?

Yes. A nice side benefit of this treatment is that in addition to eliminating hair, it improves the texture and tone of the skin. The laser also targets the skin’s melanin in a way that can clear areas of hyperpigmentation.

How Can I Get Started With These Treatments?

If you have hair that you’d like to get rid of and you’re wondering if laser treatments are right for you, the first step is to schedule a consultation. We’ll review your medical history, evaluate your skin, and talk with you about what you’re hoping to accomplish. Once we’ve determined that you’re a good candidate, we’ll schedule your first treatment for a hair-free life!

How Does This Compare to Electrolysis?

Laser hair removal and electrolysis have a lot in common. During electrolysis appointments, your provider will insert a hair-sized sterilized probe into the hair follicle and use an electric current to destroy the root. The hair is then removed from the follicle during treatment, and you leave with no hair in your treatment area.

Laser is emitting a concentrated beam of light into the follicle to damage the hair follicle, and up to 2 weeks after your laser treatment, you will see the hairs continue to shed out of the follicles that have been treated.

Both treatments can be performed all over the body, and both involve a series of appointments. Electrolysis appointments target each hair one at a time, the appointments tend to be longer and more time-consuming.

Laser is the quickest approach to larger body parts that you want hair removed. Less time is spent in the office and is more cost-effective when treating arms, legs, or bikini area.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

You’re Frustrated by Unsightly Hair

The patients who seek out this treatment usually have a noticeable amount of hair that they’re eager to address. In many cases, these patients have used at-home remedies like shaving and tweezing but want to take a more aggressive approach to hair removal. Laser hair removal more efficiently gets rid of the hair while offering long-lasting results.

You Have a Large Treatment Area

Laser treatments is an amazing option for those who have more coarse hairs like a full beard or have larger areas like legs, arms, back, and bikini!

If you have a few stray hairs on the body or face and do not want to commit to Laser Hair Removal, Electrolysis is recommended.

You’re in Good Health

Patients should be in good general health.

This treatment is not recommended for patients with keloid scars, healing problems, or vitiligo, which causes de-pigmentation of the skin. This treatment is also not recommended for women who are pregnant and/or breastfeeding.

You Want a Professional Treatment

We have all seen those At Home Laser machines, right? These treatments are not as effective and if not used right, can really damage your skin at home.

If you’ve got unsightly hair, you can tweeze or shave it away on your own. But if you’ve got a lot of hair, you may find it difficult to keep up with maintenance. And it’s hard to completely see and remove unwanted hair when it’s on your own body in those hard-to-reach places. You will spend more time and money on temporary hair removal solutions throughout a lifetime versus getting a professional treatment done to remove your unwanted hair.

Many patients are happy to turn the job over to a professional who can get every spot. And once you’ve completed your treatment series, you won’t have to worry about that unwanted hair.
