What Is Men’s Hair Removal?

Electrolysis For Men

Electrolysis is the only method classified as permanent by the FDA for men’s hair removal. Electrolysis uses an epilator device inserted into the skin to disrupt hair growth using shortwave radio frequencies. This damages the hair follicles, causing existing hair to fall out, and stopping new hair from growing. Because this process permanently destroys the cells that trigger growth in the hair follicles, hair treated properly by electrolysis will not grow back. We recommend electrolysis for men who are looking for a permanent solution to unwanted facial or body hair.

Laser Hair Removal for Men

Laser is one of the most popular methods for hair reduction and removal in America. It is safe, fast, and minimally invasive. During your laser treatment session, we will guide a laser over your skin, delivering short pulses of laser light. The light heats the hair follicles in the body until they are damaged. Once damaged, the hair follicles will no longer be able to produce future hair growth. Once the laser has damaged the hair follicle, the existing hair will fall out on its own.

How It Works

Book Your Consultation

Before beginning laser or electrolysis treatments, you’ll need to come in for a complimentary consultation. During this consultation, we’ll discuss your aesthetic goals, survey the areas you’d like to have treated, and decide which treatment option is best for your needs.

Pre-Care Instructions

We’ll send you away with instructions on how to prepare for your appointment. In general, we recommend you avoid tweezing, waxing, or shaving the areas you intend to have treated unless otherwise instructed. It’s also important to take adequate sun protection measures, including avoiding burning or tanning and using sunscreen before and after treatments. For electrolysis treatments, we recommend avoiding caffeine on the day of your treatment and staying hydrated.

What To Expect During Your Appointment

When you come in for your laser or electrolysis session, we’ll first disinfect the treatment area. We may apply a topical anesthetic if desired. If you are receiving laser treatment, we’ll also give you a pair of protective eyeglasses to wear during your appointment. Then, our highly trained technicians will use either Instantron’s SPECTRUM ELITE machine (for electrolysis) or our Lumenis LightSheer QUATTRO laser (for laser treatments) to safely and gently remove hair from the targeted areas of your body.

Whether you choose electrolysis or laser, multiple sessions will be required to get the desired result.

Aftercare Instructions

Once your appointment has finished, we’ll send you home with aftercare instructions. This will include avoiding direct sunlight to the treatment areas, being gentle when cleaning the treated area, avoiding applying lotions, harsh soaps, chemicals, or other irritants to the treatment area, keeping your hands clean and avoiding touching the treated area, and applying a cool compress to the area for relief from any discomfort or redness.

It is ok to gently exfoliate using a washcloth to help the hair shedding.

For optimal results, we recommend maintaining a regular treatment plan. Attending regular treatments can significantly improve the efficacy of your results. For laser treatments for facial hair, you’ll want to come in once every 4-6 weeks; for laser treatments for body hair, once every 8-10 weeks is sufficient. For electrolysis, we recommend that you stick to the schedule the technician has provided for you. Electrolysis is on a case-by-case basis. It could require multiple treatments per month.

Who Is This Right For?

If you are looking for a permanent solution to your unwanted body hair, electrolysis and laser hair removal for men are the best options currently available. Our clinic is proud to use Instantron’s SPECTRUM ELITE machine for electrolysis and Lumenis LightSheer Quattro laser for our laser treatments. Our advanced technologies allow us to treat all skin types, skin colors, hair thicknesses, and hair colors.

Does it Work For All Hair Colors and Skin Tones?

Electrolysis has been proven safe and effective for all skin types, skin tones, hair types, and hair colors. It is safe for almost all areas of the body, including the legs, underarms, face, and the pubic area. This is a permanent solution for treating unwanted facial or body hair and is suitable for anyone looking to remove their hair and be free from repetitive home removal options, such as shaving or topical depilatory creams.

Laser, on the other hand, requires pigment to attract heat, so this treatment is most effective on hair containing melanin. Darker hair colors, such as black or brown, will be removed more effectively than lighter colors such as blonde, white, or gray hair. We have seen variable results on red hair. If you are not sure whether electrolysis or laser is a better choice for the hair you’d like removed, feel free to contact us with your questions. We would be happy to assess which of our technologies will be most effective on your hair.
